It’s official: the global economic downturn has started to take its toll on UK jobs. Figures published by the Office for National Statistics in mid October showed the number of unemployed at 1.79 million, up 164,000. In September, claimants of Jobseeker’s Allowance increased by 31,800, to 939,000. Banking and construction continue to be among the hardest-hit sectors.
In this climate, many of those who are in jobs are deciding to stay put for the moment; some commentators are predicting that the economy will start to recover in 2010. However, as well as those forced onto the jobs market through redundancy, there will always be people who decide, for whatever reason, that the time has come for a change.
